Living on the fast lane

Matthew 6:5 NLT

“When you pray, don’t be like the hypocrites who love to pray publicly on street corners and in the synagogues where everyone can see them. I tell you the truth, that is all the reward they will ever get.”

Today it is the start of Lent – the time on the Christian calendar when we prepare for Easter by remembering the time Jesus spent in the wilderness before he started his public ministry.

Traditionally people give up luxuries such as chocolate, or fast (refrain from food). But instead of “giving up”, Lent can be a time of “taking up”, for example reading the gospels rather than watching TV. (Or maybe updating a journal with spiritual reflections.)
