Nursery or Coalface?

A friend asked me how church plants feed into the general life of the wider church.

He went on to ask if we were content to remain in a “Christian Nursery” or if we were unwilling to live out our “apparently vibrant faoith in the more bracing atmosphere of a conventional church”.

Excellent questions which I will reflect on over the next few months.

But an initial reaction – I attended the leadership stream at Spring Harvest recently and we considered the issue of discipleship, and how to make sure that we were not only taking it seriously, but how to make it relevant for all age groups.

As a core value, Pathway was “serious about discipleship” but I’m not sure that it was necessarily given the empahsis, time and resources that it deserved. (My opinion, others may disagree of course).

I guess a key question is “what is discipleship” and how does it differ from apprenticeship?

What does discipleship mean to today’s Christians in today’s society?

Not necessarily going to answer these questions today or even this month, but as I continue on my journey I’ll mull them over. How knows, I might even reach a conclusion.
